Day 2- Anniversary Cruise

Hey Retired Brickmen,

So, that evening we left Marseilles and headed for Italy and our second stop: Florence/ Pisa.

So, here is the Pisa complex.  If you notice,
not only the Tower leans, the rest of the buildings also lean!

Here we are in front of the famous
Leaning Tower of Pisa.

After a couple of hours at Pisa, we then loaded back up for the trip to Florence. As we left the bus, we were taken to the old section of Florence and the Piazza di Santa Croce (not to be confused with Jim di Croce).

The above picture of the Piazza di Santa Croce was taken from the steps of the Basilica di Santa Croce del Firenza.

Begun in 1294, it was finally finished in
1385.  It contains the tombs and remains of Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli among others.  It also has monuments(no remains) to Fermi, Marconi, Dante and several other prominent Italians throughout history.

As we were leaving the city, we passed by the Ponte Vecchio built over the Arno River. First built in 996, the bridge was destroyed and rebuilt twice, the latest in 1345.
It has always hosted shops and merchants and it is said that the concept of  bankruptcy originated here.

We bid farewell to Florence and head back to the ship for dinner and a departure to Rome, one of our busiest and most hectic days during the whole trip!

Next time on Day 3 or III -Anniversary Cruise!
